This weekend in Pembroke Pines: Free concert, Florida history, family events & more
How well do you know Florida’s history?
Long before Pembroke Pines became a diverse, self-sufficient municipality, generations of Indigenous families and settlers helped shape Florida through centuries of change.
Hundreds of years and stories woven into the state’s identity and the communities that call it home.
This weekend, a lecture offers a closer look at the state’s rich past alongside family-focused events, faith-based gatherings and a morning run.
Here’s what’s happening in Pembroke Pines from Friday, June 12, through Sunday, June 14:
Mayor’s Kids Day
For kids and teens who pre-registered for this annual event, the anticipation is over.
The 17th annual Mayor’s Kids Day runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Each child has the opportunity to venture around the city to participating businesses that will offer gifts and surprises to the “VIP’s.”
The theme for this year’s event is “Underwater Party.” Visits from characters such as Lilo and Stitch, Moana and Plato the Publixaurus are expected.
The event kicks off with a mayor meet-and-greet over lunch at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, with an entourage of “celebrity character sightings.”
To participate, kids and teens must have a wristband from the Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, acquired through preregistration.
Family Day: 250
In the second rendition of this city-sponsored series, the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery will host a free family day on Saturday, with a patriotic twist.
This family day is part of the city’s commUNITY: 250 Years in the Making initiative to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary through different events.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. and conclude by 1 p.m. Guests will be able to listen to a reading of “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller, followed by face painting.
Attendees will also be granted access to the two galleries on exhibit.
The History of Florida Archaeology
Dig into the history of Florida archaeology in the first part of a lecture series on Saturday at the South Regional/Broward College Library.
The first edition, named “Shadows and Spirits of the Past,” will be led by the Palm Beach Natural History Museum.
“Who were the first Floridians, where did they come from, what civilizations did they build here and what was their eventual fate?” are some of the questions the lecture promises to teach you, according to the event description.
The lecture will be from 3 to 4 p.m. The event is free and those interested can reserve a spot here.
