Juneteenth is a major celebration.

One that honors freedom, perseverance and the enduring spirit of Black Americans

Recognized as a national holiday in the U.S. in 2021, the name blends “June” and “nineteenth,” marking the day in 1865 when the news of emancipation reached enslaved people in Galveston Bay, Texas.

The holiday is also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day.

The city of Pembroke Pines plans to host a Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way.

The event will feature an exhibition from the traveling educational exhibit Sankofa Museum: America’s Story Through the Eyes of Its People.

The event, free and open to all ages, also includes live music by The Deep Fried Funk Band.

The band is led by three-time Grammy Award nominee Jody Hill and is known for its high-energy performances and original arrangements of popular R&B, funk, jazz and Top 40 songs.

There will be arts and crafts, guest speakers and food on-site.
