This week in Pines: Town halls, World Cup watch party, Mayor’s Kids Day & more
School’s out, so ring the bell Pembroke Pines.
Broward students have officially wrapped up the 2025-26 school year and in Pembroke Pines, June brings a slew of family-focused events.
At the local level, city government officials are encouraging voters to attend town hall meetings in their district to help inform their November ballot decisions.
On the international stage, the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off this week with two matches on Thursday, highlighted by Mexico vs. South Africa in the tournament opener.
Best part of this week’s city events? They’re all free.
Here’s what’s going on in your city from Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12:
Town hall meetings
The city has scheduled a series of town hall meetings across the four districts and large city condominiums to speak to residents about two potential referendum questions and get community feedback on a public safety bond for a Police and Fire Public Safety Complex.
Unlike the charter amendments, the bond proposal must include a maximum dollar amount in the ballot question, so voters understand the potential borrowing amount before casting a vote, which the city has not decided.
The series of town hall meetings:
- Hollybrook residents only: June 8 at 10 a.m.
- District 3 meeting at Dream Park: June 8 at 6:30 p.m.
- Park Place residents only: June 9 at 10 a.m.
- District 4 meeting at the River of Grass Theater: June 10 at 6:30 p.m.
- Century Village residents only: June 11 at 10 a.m.
Father’s Day Pictures
South Regional/Broward College Library is hosting a free picture event with its green screen from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.
The library will open its visual equipment for families wanting to remember Father’s Day with a visual memento.
Those interested must complete a Broward County Library model release form and register prior to the event. Families can take up to three photos with the backgrounds and receive them in one to three business days through email.
Families can also choose from four different backgrounds, or have the photo emailed with a blank background.
World Cup watch party
To kick off the World Cup, Baoshi Food Hall + Bar is hosting a watch party for the Mexico-South Africa match from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday.
This year’s FIFA World Cup will host its biggest tournament to date, with 48 teams from around the globe competing in 104 fixtures.
The watch party promises “multiple big screens” and happy hour specials. The match begins at 3 p.m.
Tickets are free and can be found here.
Mayor’s Kids Day
Pembroke Pines kids and teens ages 15 and under have the opportunity to participate in the 17th annual Mayor’s Kids Day on Friday.
The free event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and each child can venture around the city to participating businesses that will offer gifts and surprises to the “VIP’s.”
The theme for the event is “Underwater Party.” Visits from characters such as Lilo and Stitch, Moana and Plato the Publixaurus are expected.
The event kicks off with a mayor meet-and-greet over lunch at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, with an entourage of “celebrity character sightings.” After lunch, 17 kids will be chosen to participate in a raffle show.
Participants must pre-register in person and can do so until Thursday. Families must show proof of residency to receive their free wristband for their kids from the Recreation and Cultural Arts Department
