Summer is officially in full swing, Pembroke Pines.

If escaping the heat is on your itinerary this weekend, the city has multiple indoor events and a standout weekend festival once the day’s hottest hours have passed just for you.

The annual Caribbean America Heritage Festival happens Saturday, honoring the rich heritage of the Caribbean American people and their contribution to the U.S.

Other opportunities include a gaming competition at Keiser University, a city-sponsored dinner for veterans and a fitness class among others.

Here’s what’s happening from Friday, June 26, through Sunday, June 28, in Pembroke Pines:

Veterans dinner

On Friday, the city invites resident veterans to participate in a free dinner at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103rd Ave.

The dinner is meant to honor those who have served the country ahead of the country’s 250-year anniversary on July 4. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event runs until 9.

Guests must be veterans or transitioning service members and must show proof of status at the door. Each veteran is limited to a plus one with a $15 cost per guest.

Halo LAN classic tournament

Keiser University’s Pembroke Pines campus will host a two-day Halo LAN classic competition on Friday and Saturday.

The event is organized by Seahawks Esports, the school’s varsity team, as a fundraising initiative.

The competition will be structured as a “12-team grassroots Halo Infinite tournament,” with teams competing in a double-elimination bracket format across the two-day tournament.

Friday features “best of three” matches and Saturday will include “best of five” matches, with a bracket reset “Grand Finals” portion.

The competition, which will be held at 1640 SW 145th Ave., has a team entry fee of $40, with a scaling prize pool based on participation. Admission fees will benefit Seahawks Esports team.

The pool has reached $1,000. Players are encouraged to bring their own equipment, including controllers, keyboards, mice and headsets. No controllers will be provided on site.

Once signed up, players can join with their team on Discord.

Caribbean American Heritage Festival

Pembroke Pines will host its annual Caribbean America Heritage Festival at the Charles F. Dodge City Center on Saturday.

The free event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. and is open to all ages. Guests can expect creative activities, authentic cuisines, cultural exhibits and live entertainment.

The festival headliner is Jamaican star Wayne Wonder and his backing band, Alias.

Other live performers include soca musician Tricia Kelshall, reggae artist Devine Songz, comedy and music duo MC Nikki Crosby & DJ T-Rex, stilt dancers USVI Moko Jumbies, and steel drums group Lauderhill Steel Ensemble.

Wellness Sunday x Nike Series

Staying true to the active makeup of the city, Pembroke Gardens plans to host a morning “FUN PIT” workout sponsored by Nike and Legacy Fit on Sunday.

The class starts 9:45 a.m. and is focused on partner interval training. Nike will host the class inside the store located at 627 SW 145th Terrace. Water will be provided.

Tickets starts at $7 and the event has a two-for-one deal. Tickets can be found on Eventbrite.

This workout promises to combine high-energy partner exercises with reggaeton, pop and hip-hop music. It will be followed by a vendor mingle and raffle giveaways.
