Calling all Halo fans: Esports tourney with $1K prize pool coming to Pembroke Pines
If dystopian military combat is your game, Pembroke Pines is set to host a big-ticket esports tournament with your name on it.
Keiser University’s Pembroke Pines campus will host a Halo LAN classic for fans of the popular first-person shooter game on Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27.
Invited to the two-day tournament — organized by Seahawks Esports, the school’s varsity team — are participants and spectators, whose admission fees will benefit the team.
But the esports league says it won’t be the only group winning big.
All participating players will be entered into a $1,000 prize pool made up of half of the event’s proceeds and a donation from sponsor Luminon Gaming, a Halo-specific gaming organization and community, the team announced in a June 15 X post.
The other half of tournament profits will be “put back into the esports program to help us fund travel and help us get new equipment for our teams, as well as more equipment for us to host bigger and better events here in person,” head coach Chris Ramon said in an Instagram post.
Spectators dropping in to support friends or watch the action can expect to shell out $5 — cash only — for a day pass.
But if you want skin in the game, here’s what you need to know before singing up:
Tournament specifics
Keiser’s Halo LAN will be structured as a “12-team grassroots Halo Infinite tournament,” with teams competing in a double-elimination bracket format across the two-day tournament, Seahawks Esports says.
The first day will include “best of three” matches and the second day will include “best of five” matches, with a bracket reset “Grand Finals” portion also expected.
Registration is $40 per team and cash only. A portion of the admission fee will go toward the scaling prize pool.
Players must provide their own controllers and are strongly encouraged to also bring keyboards, mice and headsets for their setup.
Once a team is signed up, they’re welcome to join Seahawks Esports’ Discord server.
Those who want to try their hand at the tournament but don’t have a group can hop onto the server’s “LFT” channel, short for “looking for team,” to connect with other individuals searching for teammates.
About Seahawks esports
Keiser esports is relatively new compared to its athletics counterparts — formed in 2021 along with similar teams at the university’s 18 campuses across Florida — but boasts several accolades since forming.
Players on the Pembroke Pines varsity team earned state titles at the 2025 Battle for Florida, and the campuses’ Rocket League team saw multiple victories earlier this year.
