Pembroke Pines to throw July 4 bash for America’s 250th birthday. Here are details
An anniversary celebration of national proportion is coming to Pembroke Pines this summer.
The southwest Broward city will host its annual free Independence Day bash starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, at the Pines Recreation Center.
This year’s focus — America250, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 — is aiming to go above and beyond the usual fanfare.
Headlining the fun is a Colonial-era photo opportunity and keepsake experience dubbed “Dress Like It’s 1776” and matching decor to ring in the historical milestone.
A time capsule activity where attendees can leave notes and mementos for future generations also ties into the event’s time traveling theme.
What other festivities can you expect?
The city says to look forward to red, white and blue amusement rides, pin collecting and cookie decorating stations, sensory play and a toddler-friendly area outfitted with bubbles and ride-on toys.
Early birds will also be duly rewarded, with the first 500 guests receiving free American flags and the first 500 kids receiving free patriotic sunglasses.
Those with a competitive edge can enjoy the “Firecracker Fun Zone” — a game zone with classics such as potato sack races, ring toss and cornhole — or sign up for one of the event’s two pie-eating contests. Kids dig in at 7 p.m. and adults at 8 p.m.
Soundtracking the celebration are live performances by DJ Felix Sama and Remix Band. Bites from 20 food trucks and sips from a mobile bar set to serve patriotic cocktails will also keep you fueled to party all night long.
But the day wouldn’t be complete without the bash’s grand finale: a “breathtaking” red, white and blue fireworks show at 9 p.m.
