When was the last time you touched grass, Pembroke Pines?

July is National Park and Recreation Month, and you can make the most of the lush green spaces and community areas that the city has to offer.

To celebrate the countrywide observance, first coined in 1985 to celebrate local and state parks as well as the workers who maintain them, the southwest Broward city is throwing outdoor parties all month long.

City-sponsored events such as the Mayor’s Play Ball on July 10 and the July 18 “dive-in” movie showing of “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” at the Academic Village Swim Pool are set to anchor the month’s festivities.

But the city is encouraging residents to get outside beyond its organized gatherings and has several ideas to strike inspiration.

Looking for a calm afternoon out? Consider a picnic under the trees at Ashley Hale Kiddie Park or take your pup for a walk at the Craig Rupp K-9 Dog Park.

Social butterflies might enjoy a pickup basketball game at Rose G. Price Park or pickleball at Silver Lakes South Park.

And if you’re looking to beat the heat, a swim at the Towngate Pool or the Pembroke Pines YMCA Aquatic Center is sure to cool you off.

Whatever your choice of summer fun is, Pembroke Pines has dozens of public parks and recreation facilities.

Check out these 30 city parks for ideas on how to celebrate spend National Park and Recreation Month.
