Frontier adds new route from FLL airport after Spirit’s closure. Here’s where

Frontier Airlines has picked up eight routes previously served by Spirit, including one out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The carrier introduced the expanded schedule on Sunday, July 5, as it joins other airlines filling the gap left after Spirit shuttered service in early May.

The routes include daily nonstop flights between FLL and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. Introductory fares start at $49 through July 12, according to the airline.

“We are pleased to grow our service across the country to ensure low-cost flight options remain available to consumers as they plan their travel this summer and beyond,” Frontier Vice President of Network and Operations Design Josh Flyr said in a news release.

Spirit, a Dania Beach-based carrier and a longtime staple for budget-conscious South Florida travelers, had operated out of FLL since the early 1990s before announcing its closure on May 2.

The carrier credited its collapse to insurmountable financial pressures and a “sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices.”

According to April airport data, Frontier holds 3.8% of passenger traffic at Fort Lauderdale, the smallest market share among the airport’s major airlines.
