As Pembroke Pines prepares to celebrate Independence Day, city officials are reminding residents to keep safety top of mind if using fireworks at home.

The city will host its free July 4 celebration at the Pines Recreation Center at 9 p.m. on Saturday, but others may choose to celebrate with their own light shows.

In an Instagram post, the Pembroke Pines Police Department encouraged residents planning to celebrate at home to “keep in mind these tips so you can safely enjoy the holiday.”

  • Avoid mixing alcohol and fireworks. Always have a responsible and sober adult on hand to supervise fireworks.
  • Keep an eye on your pets, especially if they get scared by fireworks, and make sure their tag and microchip information is up to date.
  • Touch base with your neighbors if you’re planning to host a loud party or use fireworks.

Florida law allows for the use of consumer fireworks on July 4, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

These include those classified as low-hazard 1.4G devices such as sparklers, fountains and ground spinners, party poppers, snakes and glow worms.

Aerial or explosive fireworks are restricted to professional use and are illegal without a permit.

The Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue department, which reported zero firework-related injuries last year, warned that sparklers can cause serious burns despite being considered mostly harmless.

Officials also urge residents to use extra caution as dry conditions have increased the risk of brush fires across South Florida.

Most recently, the June 28 Atlantic fire that sparked in the Everglades grew to nearly 6,000 acres.

Police also said that those who need assistance for a noise complaint or other concerns can contact the department’s non-emergency line at 954-764-HELP.
