Handyman held at gunpoint at Pembroke Pines home over unfinished job, police say
A 46-year-old man was arrested after police said he held a handyman at gunpoint inside a Pembroke Pines home and prevented him from leaving over supposed mistakes in his work.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department executed a search warrant near Taft Street, just east of Hiatus Road, on May 19, in connection with an aggravated assault investigation that began 10 days earlier.
Police told the Pembroke Pines News on Wednesday that Jrguerin Augusmar was taken into custody with the assistance of the Broward Sheriff’s Office on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment.
According to the probable cause affidavit, officers responded to a McDonald’s parking lot at about 3:53 p.m. on May 9 regarding a “reported kidnapping and aggravated assault.”
The victim told police Augusmar pointed a gun at him at a house down the street and wouldn’t let him leave.
Investigators said the victim worked as a handyman and had been hired to do a job for Augusmar’s brother. On May 8, Augusmar’s brother asked the victim to return to the home to correct some mistakes with his work, but the victim was unable to do so that day, documents show.
The following day, the handyman returned to finish the work, according to the report.
After the handyman arrived, Augusmar allegedly approached him, grabbed the collar of his shirt, racked the slide of a black semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at him.
He then told the handyman that if his brother calls him, he needs to “show up when he says and on time,” the probable cause report reads.
Augusmar then allegedly told the victim he had to stay at the home until the work was finished. The handyman told police he was afraid for his life and didn’t believe he was free to leave.
Investigators said the victim was eventually able to calm Augusmar down, then he drove to a nearby McDonald’s to call the police.
Augusmar, of Pembroke Pines, was arrested May 19 and bonded out of jail two days later, records show.
