Get your paddles ready and your game faces on, Pembroke Pines. An evening of friendly competition is coming your way.

The city will host the sophomore edition of its annual Pickleball Social at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, at the Pembroke Lakes Tennis Center.

The first 24 participants to sign up for the free event will enjoy a round-robin doubles tournament — in which each team faces off against one another — supplied with refreshments and community.

No experience is required, as the city invites seasoned pros and newbies to register for the event.

In keeping with the social’s promise of friendly competition, no prizes — other than bragging rights — will be handed to the winning duo.

“This event is all about community and connection. We are hosting a friendly round-robin tournament designed for players of all levels to hit the court, meet new people, and enjoy the game in a relaxed, high-energy environment,” city spokesperson Marianne Wohlert told the Pembroke Pines News on Jan. 5. “Come for the competition, stay for the great company.”

Though the Pembroke Pines Pickleball Social saw its start in April 2025, the city has long embraced the racket sport, building its first courts at the Pembroke Lakes Tennis Center in 2017.

Pickleball — which differs from tennis in equipment, court size and rules — has been played in the United States since the 1960s, but saw a popularity boom in the 2020s, growing 223.5% from 2021 to 2024, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association.

Pembroke Pines now boasts 16 courts across the city, located at Pembroke Lakes Tennis Center, Silver Lakes South Park and Paul J. Maxwell Park.

Pickleballers can play at the tennis center from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends, or at either public park from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Fees may apply.

For more information or to register for the Pickleball Social, call the center at 954-431-4146.
