Pines senior center plans holiday party for those young — and young at heart
If you’re looking for another holiday party to add to your calendar, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center’s got something you’ll want to check out.
The senior facility — which doubles as a venue for community events — is inviting guests of all ages to its annual free Holiday Open House, providing a sneak peek into its offerings while spreading Christmas cheer.
Neither a membership with the center nor an entry fee are required to attend the bash, hosted twice each December — this year, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 301 NW 103 Ave. — thanks to its popularity with locals.
On the open house’s itinerary are live performances, festive fare such as hot cocoa and cookies, party favors and a holiday show featuring dancers and magicians that the center’s assistant director, Silvia Aguilar, says has drawn attendees to the event since 1998.
“This wonderful event has become a sought-after tradition as we now see children who visited years ago are now bringing their children to delight in the sights,” she told the Pembroke Pines News.
For families with young kids, several holiday photo opportunities — themed trees, a winter village scene, menorahs and a nativity scenes — make the perfect backdrops to your next holiday card and Santa will be available to take note of every child’s wish list.
“The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center is proud to have dedicated staff that transform the center into a Winter Wonderland year after year,” Aguilar said.
An adult day care program, fitness and citizenship classes, health insurance help and invites to events including flea markets, dinner dances and tea parties are some of the facility’s most popular attractions.
The center typically sees an uptick in memberships following the open house, Aguilar adds, with registration being free for those 60 and over and $40 for anyone under 60.
