Second suspect emerges in deadly Pembroke Pines restaurant shooting, records show
An argument and a second suspect are the newest details in an Oct. 19 Pembroke Pines restaurant shooting that left one dead and one injured, Broward County court records show.
Investigators found that the suspected shooter, 27-year-old Clayton Hicks of Miami, was involved in “what appears to be a verbal altercation” moments before firing at two men in the parking lot of Rickey’s Sports Bar & Grill, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department responded to gunfire at the restaurant, located at 8389 Pines Blvd, around 3:45 a.m. to find two shooting victims and they were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment.
One was pronounced dead by hospital staff, according to the affidavit, while the other was listed in stable condition .
Hicks arrived at the restaurant’s parking lot in a “dark color Tesla” and stopped behind the victims’ car, a “red Dodge Journey,” before getting into an argument with the two men, who investigators say then exited their vehicle .
When the two men returned to their car, Hicks began “to walk toward the victims, [raise] his arms and [fire] a firearm at the victims,” the affidavit says.
Surveillance footage then reveals a second suspect “wearing all black” emerged from the west and pointed a gun at the two men before “running toward a white BMW X3 and entering the driver’s seat,” detectives said.
He then lapped the plaza, picked up Hicks — who police say donned a gray tracksuit— in the rear driver’s side and sped west on Pines Boulevard, according to the affidavit.
Officers later found the BMW — registered under Hicks’ name — parked in the driveway of a Miami home and monitored its route, stopping the 27-year-old and a female passenger for a “tint violation” 2 miles from the residence, according to the court document.
When Pembroke Pines detectives arrived to confront Hicks, the affidavit reads, he explained he was at the restaurant during the shooting, but offered several contradictions to what detectives found via CCTV footage.
Hicks originally said he stayed by his vehicle during the shooting and drove off in his BMW alone, court records show. When investigators showed him the surveillance video, police say he identified himself running through the parking lot and said he fired 22 rounds “because he heard shooting,” not aiming to hit the victims.
Hicks was arrested the night of Oct. 19 in Miami with the help of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, PPPD said in an Oct. 20 statement. A second arrest has not been made as of Oct. 28, agency spokesperson Amanda Conwell told the Pembroke Pines News.
The department did not disclose any additional updates on the shooting as the investigation is ongoing.
Hicks has been charged with second-degree murder with a firearm and is being held at Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail without bond, according to jail records. His lawyer, public defender Akilya Maya Drake, did not respond to the Pembroke Pines News’ request for comment on Oct. 28.
The Oct. 19 shooting marks the second time Rickey’s Sports Bar & Grill’s parking lot has seen shots fired this year. An April 12 shooting outside the restaurant left one man dead, with investigators saying it did “not appear to be a random act of violence.”
The restaurant announced new safety measures — including an earlier closing time, a PPPD partnership and an upcoming community event to address gun violence — on its Instagram page in an effort “to keep our community safe.”
