Donate an old phone, help save a life: Pines Police host domestic violence drive
Looking for ways to give back this fall? The Pembroke Pines Police Department says your old cell phone could help someone in need be one call away from help.
The agency is collecting cell phones through Nov. 2 on behalf of Women in Distress, a domestic violence center in Broward County, and repurposing the devices “to help those in crisis connect with emergency services,” the department said in an Instagram post announcing the drive.
All phones — working, nonworking and older models — are welcome as well as chargers.
Headquartered in Margate, Women in Distress has served abuse survivors since 1974 and offers housing, counseling, legal and financial support, and emergency services — such as food, clothing and cell phones — to those in need.
“Our theme is a call to action, an anthem of resilience: ‘Reclaim Your Power,’” Linda Parker, WID’s president and CEO, says on the center’s website. “It’s a promise to survivors that they can shatter the illusions their abusers imposed upon them and rise above adversity, rebuild their lives, and create a brighter future.”
Broward saw 2,626 domestic violence cases against women in 2023 and a 29% increase in the rate of offenses from 2020 to 2023, according to the county auditor’s Status of Women report released in February
The drive coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To participate, reset your phone and drop it off at the East PPPD headquarters, located at 9500 Pines Blvd, any day from 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
