It’s Election Day in Pembroke Pines. Here’s everything you need to know
Southeast and southwest Pembroke Pines residents: Who will oversee your side of town once again is in your hands.
The city holds its municipal elections for the District 1 and District 4 commission seats on Tuesday, March 10. On the ballot are five candidates vying to serve four-year terms, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Those gunning for the District 1 win — and representing the east side of the city from Hiatus Road past Pembroke Road until reaching Florida’s Turnpike — are incumbent Tom Good, retired Pembroke Pines police sergeant James Henry, and insurance agent Dennis Hinds, who’s making his third attempt at office.
Officeholder and Vice Mayor Michael “Mike” Hernandez runs against event planner Elizabeth “Liz” Burns for the District 4 seat, which represents the west side from Flamingo Road until reaching U.S. 27.
Burns has previously run for mayor and made multiple bids for a seat on the commission, including her loss to Hernandez in the previous election.
Those who secure their spot on the city commission will be tasked with navigating hot-button issues including affordability, transportation, the potential impacts of looming property tax repeals, the closure of local elementary schools, public facility upgrades and more.
