Florida talks, cosplay and more: Here’s what’s on tap this week in Pembroke Pines

The week leading up to the international celebration of love, kindness and friendship can be tough on wallets.

Fortunately, there are several low-cost events happening around Pembroke Pines to help you celebrate without breaking the bank.

Florida Talks: The Civil Rights Movement in Florida

In honor of Black History Month, the City of Pembroke Pines has partnered with Florida Humanities to present a talk on the civil rights movement in Florida at the commission chambers from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday.

Dr. J. Michael Butler is the Kenan Distinguished Professor of History and Humanities Department Chair at Flagler College in St. Augustine and will lead the night’s presentation.

The hour-long talk is free and open to the public. No registration is required. The city recommends the event for those 18 years old and up.

The talk is part of a quarterly lecture series the city hosts, aimed at educating, engaging and sparking meaningful conversations within the community.

Valentine’s Day Green Screen

For those wishing to create a unique Valentine’s Day photo ahead of Saturday, the South Regional/Broward College Library is offering its green screen with four diffferent background designs from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The event is free and open to all. Registration is required and can be done with this link.

Library staff asks that guests include all those who are taking a picture within the registration to be able to accommodate for groups.

Pictures will be sent within one to three business days to the email used for registration.

Cosplay Nite

Taking place at the I Vape N Sip (IVNS) shop, located at 16642 Sheridan St., this “Cosplay Nite” event offers a more Anti-Valentine’s Day experience from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday.

The event is open to guests 18 and older. Attendees can expect vendors, video games, themed drinks and interactive activities, including find-your-match bingo, Valentine’s rose grams and a secret admirer board.

DJ JOIBOI will provide music for the night. For those wishing to show off their best cosplay, the event will also feature a contest with prizes for the top costumes.

Entry is free, but there is a $10 fee for activity access.
