Student art, live music and local crafts headline this Pembroke Pines fest
Looking to connect with your inner artist? The City of Pembroke Pines invites you to a creativity-filled weekend chockful of festivities for amateur creatives and professional Picassos alike.
From 1 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 9, the annual Pembroke Pines Festival of the Arts will take over the Charles F. Dodge City Center with a schedule boasting live music, local vendors, galleries, prizes and plenty of good eats.
Miami’s self-procliamed “funk machine” Loz Wizzards, Colombian-American “La Voz” winner AleMor and saxophonist Nestor Zurita take the stage from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
That’s followed on Sunday by local rock band The Flyers, Cuban-American country artist Gabriel Key and Pompano Beach-based roots rocker Shaw Davis.
Also on the docket is the awards ceremony for the city’s eighth annual student art competition.
Students ages 5 to 18 who either live in Pembroke Pines or attend an area school were invited to submit their artwork — including collages, drawings, paintings, photography, sculptures or mixed-media pieces — from Sept. 2 through Oct. 31.
Several winners spanning elementary, middle and high school categories will be awarded with a ribbon and prizes ranging from $25 to $100 for their “artistic expression and creativity,” according to the festival’s website.
All participants will enjoy free frozen yogurt from sponsor Menchie’s.
Those who don’t qualify for the contest can still unleash their creativity at one of several interactive art workshops held at the Frank C. Ortis Gallery or explore one of the three exhibtions on display for its fall series.
Prefer to be a patron over an artist?
Feel free to “shop for unique finds and handmade treasures” from a curated marketplace of artisans or grab a bite from the festival’s food truck and local eateries lineup.
Admission is free and open to the public with registration. For more information, check out Pembroke Pines Festival of the Arts’ website or Instagram page.
