This week in Pembroke Pines: Here’s your guide to what’s happening around town
The start of the holiday season can bring its own stresses. From buying meticulously meaningful gifts from the whole family to hosting elaborate dinners for your in-laws, the cusp of the annual holiday anxieties is already on the horizon.
But since we haven’t even made it to Halloween, here’s a list of early-onset holiday cheer events to help get your week started on the right foot — and most are free.
Whether you’re looking to impress a date over wine and steak or soak in local art at an opening exhibition, Pembroke Pines has plenty to offer.
Here’s what’s happening Oct. 13-17:
Monday
“The Marvelous Wonderettes”: The Pembroke Pines Theater continues its production through Sunday, Oct. 19. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online. For a special spotlight on co-directors Geoffrey Mergele and Del Marrero, click here.
Twilight Tales: Get in the spooky spirit with a themed story time for the whole family from 6-6:30 p.m. at the South Regional/Broward College Library in the Story Room. Expect stories, songs and crafting fun for everyone to enjoy. To register, click here.
Tuesday
Taste of Twenty: In celebrating its 20th anniversary, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants is hosting a special Wine Club Pairing Dinner for $79 per person starting at 7 p.m. The three-hour experience includes exclusive menu pairs and pours. For tickets, click here.
Thursday
Spanish Book Club: From 11 a.m.-1 p.m. the City of Pembroke Pines hosts its Spanish book club every third Thursday of the month in room 215 of the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The group reads and comments on a variety of Spanish literature. For more information, call 954-450-6888.
Holiday Fantasies Craft Show: Kicking off the holiday season in style, the Southern Handcraft Society presents its annual craft show from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The free event will feature handmade creations from artists and crafters across Broward, Miami-Dade and Pam Beach counties, running through Saturday, Oct. 18. For more information, call 954-434-0895.
Opening Reception for the Fall Exhibition Series: The City of Pembroke Pines will celebrate the opening reception of the Frank’s Fall Exhibition Series from 6-9 p.m. at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery and Exhibit Hall. The free, all-ages event will unveil three exhibitions that “weave toegther memory, materiality, and belonging,” featuring the artworks of Lisu Vega, Sibel Kocabasi and Stephanie McMIllan.
Friday
Veteran Assistance: On the first and third Friday of each month, Pembroke Pines hosts in-person veteran assistance in English and Spanish from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in room 198 at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Accredited officers will be available to help with burial, appeals, pension claims and more.
