From runs to dog costume contests: What’s in store this weekend in Pembroke Pines
As Green Day fans finally rise now that September’s ended, Pembroke Pines kicks off October with plenty of movement, costumes, music and even some shredding — papers, not guitars.
Florida may not deliver a cool autumn breeze just yet, but this weekend’s events offer plenty of ways to celebrate the early beginnings of a new season.
Here’s what’s happening:
Rise & Refuel
Hosted by the Pines Running Co., this free 7 a.m. run will start at the Pines Protein Bar on Saturday. All paces and walkers are welcome and can refuel after they go the distance with 25% off on protein shakes, snacks and more at the Pines Protein Bar.
Registration for the event is available through the SweatPals app.
Bow Wow Ween
Celebrating the Halloween spirit for all members of the family, both two-legged and four-legged, is the annual Bow Wow Ween. Held at the Craig Rupp K-9 Dog Park on Saturday from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., this event features games, pet vendors and costume contests for dogs of all sizes.
Those who want to enter their furry friend for a chance to win must fill out an application in advance. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information and full event itinerary, go to www.ppines.com.
Dog Mom Walk
Sticking to the weekend’s pup-friendly theme is this free community event hosted by local canine celebrity Tour with Teddy and Yum Pup, a small business dedicated to making high-quality meals for dogs.
On Saturday, the morning will start at the Brimstone Woodfire Grill in Pembroke Gardens with a 10 a.m. group walk, followed by an 11 a.m. Bark and Brunch. Brunch reservations are separate from the walk and include a complimentary dog menu featuring Yum Pup recipes, while humans can order à la carte.
Falcon Sound Invitational
For fans of brass, percussion and high-energy performances, Flanagan High School is hosting the 22nd annual Falcon Sound Invitational on Saturday.
Gates open at 11 a.m., and the day features elite high school and collegiate marching bands competing in one of the season’s opening showcases.
General admission tickets start at $23, with children 5 years old and younger admitted for free, and can be purchased in advance or at the concessions line the day of the performance.
Shred-Tober Fest
In an unusual twist on Oktoberfest celebrations, the Moscoso Real Estate Group of Pembroke Pines is hosting a free Shred-Tober event on Saturday from noon-2 p.m.
Shred Force will be at the event to help guests safely destroy sensitive documents. Enjoy fresh pretzels, cold beer and festive music.
Registration for the event will include the chance to win AirPods in the raffle.
RUNNING GIVES x Pembroke Gardens
For runners looking to get their miles in both days this weekend, Lululemon of Pembroke Gardens is hosting a 3-mile morning run on Sunday at 8:45 a.m.
Open to first-timers and runners of all paces, the session will conclude at 11 a.m. at the store.
Parking and tickets are free but limited.
Juan Fernando Velasco performance
