Pembroke Pines wants to honor veterans’ legacies — starting with your story
Calling all Pembroke Pines veterans: Your city wants to hear your story.
The city is recruiting former military service members for its annual “Honoring Veterans Portrait Project,” a curated exhibition created to honor the “diversity, heritage, and culture” of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Veterans will be asked to sit for a photo and respond to several questions about their time in service, which will be recorded and converted into short stories that will accompany their portrait.
Some will have their photos and histories displayed at the city’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11 at Memorial Park, which also will feature a presentation of colors, musical performances and guest speakers.
Want to share how military life shaped your story? Participating ex-service members are asked to register soon due to limited space and fill out a brief questionnaire about their background.
In addition to which branch you served in and how long you were in the armed forces, the city wants to know:
- What motivated you to join the military?
- What experiences or moments had the greatest impact on you, and why?
- In what ways has your military service influenced the person you are today?
All veterans are welcome to apply, but those who reside in Pembroke Pines will receive priority consideration, according to the city.
Portrait and interview sessions are scheduled for September at the Carl Schecter Southwest Focal Point Community Center.
