Jamaica’s Independence Day is coming up on Aug. 6 and southwest Broward is becoming the place to celebrate.

Miramar will host events on back-to-back days geared toward Jamaican families and anyone interested in island culture.

The weekend before the holiday, join a fete that features three popular DJs. The next day, Miramar will host its Ole Time Fair that gives a taste of Jamaican culture.

Here’s what to know about Miramar’s events celebrating Jamaican Independence Day:

Jamaica 64th Independence Day Fete

Get your flags ready for Miramar’s Jamaican independence party. This event on Friday, July 31, at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center will feature a competition for the best male and female outfits, so attendees are encouraged to wear their black, green and gold.

Admission and parking are free, and the event is scheduled to run from 7 to 11 p.m.

Hosted by Vice Mayor Carson “Eddy” Edwards, who is originally from Jamaica, the fete will feature sets from DJ King Waggy Tee, DJ Rocksteadyy and DJ Richie D, highlighting Jamaica’s sound system culture.

King Waggy Tee is a legendary Jamaican DJ and radio personality known across South Florida for 48 years on the scene and once received a proclamation from the city establishing “Waggy Tee Day.”

The Ole Time Fair, celebrating Jamaica’s independence, will be headlined by Ky-Mani Marley and is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater.

Jamaica Ole Time Fair

Hosted by Mayor Wayne M. Messam, this event is all about showcasing the culture.

From 3 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater, enjoy live music from artists including Ky-Mani Marley and Warrior Love Band, or buy goods from the Coronation Farmers’ Market.

The Coronation Farmers’ Market is a famous market in Kingston, Jamaica, being recreated for the event.

Warrior Love Band will perform a tribute to Jimmy Cliff and Ernie Smith, two legendary Jamaican musicians who died within the past year.

Marley is a Grammy Award-nominated artist and one of Bob Marley’s children who performed at Miramar Cultural Center’s Journey To Kingston in May.

Other artists scheduled to perform are Louie Culture, D’Yani and DJ Billy Slaughter.

The event is free, but parking is $10 and available for purchase in advance.
