Flying to South America? Avianca expands service as it switches FLL terminals
South America’s second-largest airline is moving its operations inside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, shifting to a new terminal ahead of an expansion of its service to Colombia.
Avianca Airlines announced Thursday, June 25, that it will be switching to FLL’s Terminal 4 from Terminal 1, which is located on the north side.
The transition is scheduled to take effect Monday, June 29, with the first official flight bound for Bogotá, Colombia.
“The move to Terminal 4 will allow Avianca to centralize its operations in a larger space designed to support the airline’s incremental flight activity at FLL,” the company said in a news release, according to the Sun Sentinel.
The move comes weeks before the airline will expand its operations in Florida with direct routes of out FLL to two more Colombian cities: Barranquilla and Cali, beginning July 15.
“Fort Lauderdale is a key market for Avianca, and this relocation reflects our continued commitment to strengthening our operation in South Florida while offering customers a smoother and more efficient travel experience,” according to the airline.
The Barranquilla route will fly at approximately 4:30 p.m and 10 p.m. The Cali route will run at about 9 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Avianca also serves Bogotá and Medellín from FLL.
According to airport data, the carrier flew about 16,000 international flights in the month of April, accounting for roughly 0.5% of FLL’s total flight share.
The carrier operates more than 400 weekly flights in the U.S., connecting 14 cities in Latin America with more than 80 destinations across the Americas and Europe, Avianca said in the news release.
Local passengers flying out of FLL after the weekend are advised to check their boarding passes, as all check-in counters and arrival gates will be altered to reflect the transition.
Tickets for the new route are now available through the airline’s website and app.
