Man faces multiple charges after elderly dog abuse caught on video, Pines cops say
A Miami man is behind bars after being seen on camera abusing and abandoning his elderly dog near a supermarket, according to the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
Surveillance video captured Humberto Exposito, 60, throwing a German shepherd several feet to the ground from the back of a box truck while making a delivery to a Sedano’s Supermarkets around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, the agency said in a news release.
Footage shared on PPPD’s Instagram page shows the dog scrambling to stabilize itself while being tossed and falling onto its back after hitting the ground near the store at 10333 Pines Blvd.
The Pembroke Pines News is not publishing the video due to its graphic content.
“Exposito returned to the truck after completing the delivery as the dog remained immobile on the ground,” police said. “Exposito made no effort to help the dog and left it behind with no access to food, water, shelter, or protection.”
Investigators say the dog, now undergoing medical evaluation and treatment at Broward County Animal Care, was found malnourished, with matted hair and signs of hip dysplasia.
Exposito was located the following day by Pines officers and detectives, who booked him into Broward Main Jail on multiple charges on June 25, according to police.
He was behind bars as of June 26 and is awaiting a bond hearing to determine whether he’ll be allowed to post bail.
His charges include a third-degree felony for aggravated animal cruelty and two misdemeanors for abandonment of an animal and confinement of an animal without sufficient air exchange.
Locals turned to PPPD’s comment section to vent their frustrations and praise the agency for taking action.
“This made me absolutely sick to my stomach, but as an employee of this amazing department I know the officers will do their best to get justice for this poor baby,” Chrissy Sasso-Groves wrote under the department’s June 25 Instagram post.
“Absolutely disgusting. Thank you to PPPD for arresting this man,” Michelle Hernandez said.
“Animals are some of the most innocent, loving souls on this earth. Choosing to harm them says far more about a person’s character,” another user commented.
