Woman gets probation in accidental shooting that killed stepson in Pines home
Four years after a teen was accidentally shot and killed in a Pembroke Pines home, the stepmother charged in his death has been released on probation, court records show.
A Broward judge on June 3 sentenced Francy Marcos to probation for the 2022 death of her 15-year-old stepson, Achilles Lopez, ordering 10 years for a manslaughter-with-a-firearm conviction and five years for aggravated assault with a firearm.
Marcos, 28, pleaded guilty to the felony charges on May 27, according to court records. She’s also prohibited from possessing firearms, weapons or ammunition.
Lopez was shot on June 11, 2022, inside the Pembroke Pines home that Marcos shared with his father, her fiancé, an arrest warrant details.
The family was preparing to eat at a pizza restaurant when police say Marcos picked up a gun left by the home’s front door and jokingly aimed it at Lopez and the family dogs, officials say.
Investigators say when Marcos pulled the trigger, she “did not think the firearm was loaded” and told officers “she did not intend to shoot (Lopez) while she was pointing the firearm at him.”
Lopez was hit once in the chest from a distance of approximately 2 or 3 feet, the warrant says.
The boy was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital by Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue, where he died of his injuries less than an hour after being shot.
Records show Marcos no longer is being held at a Broward County jail.
