The next time severe weather moves into Pembroke Pines or police respond to a major incident, residents may be the first to know through a new alert system.

The city recently launched Alert! Pembroke Pines, an emergency alert service to inform residents of incidents that are deemed imminent threats to public safety.

The system is powered by Alert Florida, a statewide emergency notification program.

Alert! Pembroke Pines can send alerts via phone call, text messages or email for events such as active police scenes, endangered missing persons, natural disasters, flooding and fires.

Residents have the choice to opt in to receive non-emergency notifications about utility outages, water main breaks, planned road closures and town hall meetings

The city previously used CodeRED for emergency notifications, but that system no longer is operational.

Residents who want to continue receiving alerts must create an account with the system with a valid phone number or email.

Residents can sign up or update their contact information here.
