Plane crashes near Pembroke Pines hospital; no injuries reported, police say
A plane crash in Pembroke Pines prompted police and fire rescue teams to respond and assist with the wreckage, according to authorities.
Officers and firefighters responded to 800 E. Cypress Drive on Friday, May 29, to find the remains of a light aircraft in a field just north of the South Florida State Hospital, PPPD shared in an Instagram post.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department said all occupants were conscious and breathing, adding that “no additional injuries have been reported” and that traffic near the psychiatric hospital is unaffected.
Details on what caused the crash or how many passengers were on board were unknown. However, a police scanner shows the plane may have been experiencing mechanical issues and headed for North Perry Airport with two people on board.
North Perry, which typically services flight training and light aircraft and is located approximately one mile from the crash site, has not responded to the Pembroke Pines News’ request for comment as of May 29.
Insignia on the plane’s empennage appears to show the craft is part of Blue Sky Aviation, a flight school based at North Perry and headed by Pembroke Pines commissioner Jay Schwartz, who serves as the school’s president and chief operating officer.
Schwartz has not responded to the Pembroke Pines News’ request for comment as of May 29.
This is a developing story that will be updated if more information becomes available.
