An elderly woman lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a canal at a Pembroke Pines park, where a nearby “good Samaritan” jumped into the water to help pull her from the car before first responders arrived, police said.

At about 1:41 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, the vehicle crashed at C.B. Smith Park, located at 900 N. Flamingo Road, according to the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

“An elderly driver lost control of her vehicle, drove off the roadway and crashed into a lake,” PPPD Senior Media Relations Manager Amanda Conwell wrote in a statement to Pembroke Pines News on May 26. “The car became fully submerged, and our PD Dive Team assisted in removing the vehicle from the water.”

Officials said the bystander entered the canal to help the driver out of the car before road patrol arrived at the scene.

Under the PPPD’s Instagram post about the incident, the good Samaritan identified himself as Jayson Jurado.

In a comment, he wrote: “God put me at the right place at the right time. I’m just glad the woman is ok.”

According to WPLG Local 10, Pembroke Pines fire rescue personnel also responded to the scene and took the driver to Memorial Hospital West, where she was said to be in stable condition.

The cause of the crash “appears to be accidental,” officials said.

There were no other occupants inside the vehicle.
