West Broward communities are seeing the smoke lift two days after a massive wildfire charred thousands of acres.
The southwest portion of the Max Road Fire, which burned west of U.S. 27 and sparked around N. Krome Avenue and NW 186th Street, was snuffed out late on Monday, May 11, according to the Pembroke Pines Fire Department.
“The only remaining active fire is located to the northwest and continues moving north, away from the city,” the agency posted on its Instagram account. “Our units are no longer operating on scene; however, our department will continue monitoring conditions closely.”
The fire had burned 11,339 acres of the Everglades and was 70% contained as of the early afternoon on May 12, per the Florida Forest Service’s live fire map.
Flames first sparked around 12:30 p.m. on May 10, prompting a multi-agency response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Florida Forest Service, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Pembroke Pines Fire Department.
Residents of Pines’ Holly Lake community, located in the city’s far west region, near 21740 NW Seventh St., were closest to the blaze and warned of “visible smoke and a strong odor outdoors” by police and fire agencies.
Despite the tall flames and thick smog left behind by the fire, no evacuations or injuries have been reported as of May 12.
