Summer is nearing, and with it, boating season. If you’re looking to sail or cruise, Pembroke Pines is helping residents brush up on boating basics.

The Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue is hosting a one-day “Boat America” course for novices and those who need to brush up on their skills on Saturday, May 16.

Held at the fire agency’s training facility, 1101 SW 208th Ave., the program runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will be taught by instructors from Dania Beach-based U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 39.

“Recreational Boating Safety remains a top priority mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and we’re proud to help make our waterways safer for all,” Flotilla Commander Charlene Dykman wrote in an April 26 Facebook post about the unit’s last Boat America graduating class.

Participants will be guided through “the basics, safety tips, and everything you need to confidently hit the water” during the 10-hour class and earn their Florida State Boater ID Card.

The cost is $28.52 and includes the cost of all materials, including a take-home workbook.
