Pines man is shooter in murder-suicide of Davie beauty school student, cops say
A Pembroke Pines man is the shooter of a Jan. 27 murder-suicide that locked down parts of Davie and left a Miami woman dead, according to police.
Jose Orpi, 25, and Aileen Martinez, 20, “were known to one another and had previously been in a relationship,” before the Pembroke Pines man shot and killed her outside Aveda Institute South Florida, 4186 S University Dr., according to Davie Police Department detectives.
Martinez was a student at the beauty school, police added.
Police have not released additional details — inlcuding why Orpi shot his ex-girlfriend — as of Feb. 2 due to the ongoing investigation.
The shooting
Martinez was attending class and sitting in a parked car in Aveda Institute’s parking lot on Jan. 27 “when she was approached by her former boyfriend” and shot, according to a Jan. 29 statement from her family.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, the family added.
Police scanners revealed that officers found two people injured inside a white Toyota RAV4 and identified a “possible male suspect wearing a blue surgical mask in a parking lot,” when they arrived, the Miami Herald reported on Jan. 27.
Officers cleared the area and posted an advisory about the shooting on X — explaining police “were not looking for a suspect, but people should still steer clear of the area” — around 3 p.m., the Miami Herald reported.
Martinez’s family confirmed that the former couple split up last fall, CBS Miami reported on Jan. 31, which led to Orpi calling her “excessively” and Martinez considering a phone number change.
Who was Aileen Martinez?
Martinez was considered “the shining light in her family’s life,” a reference to her Gaelic-origin name’s meaning, her family shared in a GoFundMe post created Jan. 29.
The fundraiser has exceeded its $50,000 goal, reaching over $65,400 as of Feb. 2, and proceeds will go toward funeral costs.
Her favorites included rock n’ roll, thrift shopping, playing computer video games, discovering new makeup tricks and the color jade green, which her family wrote complemented her loving and calm nature.
“Through us, her light will continue to shine. ... We hold her family, friends, classmates, and our entire community in our hearts,” Aveda Institute wrote in a Jan. 30 Instagram post.
The beauty school contributed $20,000 to Martinez’s fundraiser and is listed as the top donor as of Feb. 2.
“RIP Aileen ... I didn’t know her personally but as an Aveda alumni this hits home… wow… heartbreaking,” commented Christie Garcia, a Hallandale Beach cosmetologist and former student.
Martinez is survived by her parents, Denis Martinez and Lissette Alvarez, a 17-year-old brother, Marcus, and a 10-year-old sister, Celeste, and “were inseparable,” the GoFundMe says.
“We condemn the violence and stalking that led to this unimaginable loss. No parent should have to bury their child, and no one should ever live in fear for choosing to walk away from a relationship,” her family’s statement reads.
Who was Jose Orpi?
Little is known about the 25-year-old outside of his Pembroke Pines residency and romantic ties to Martinez.
According to CBS Miami, an online memorial reads, “Orpi’s passing has left family, friends, and neighbors deeply saddened. Jose was known for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those around him.”
