A blast from the past: Long before Eras Tour, Taylor Swift played Pembroke Pines

Photographs resurfacing across South Florida social media have prompted a look back at an otherwise unremarkable Sunday 18 years ago in Pembroke Pines.

That was the second day of the annual KISS Country Chili Cook-off at C.B. Smith Park, featuring a musical act few attendees recognized at the time as a future mega star: a teenage country singer named Taylor Swift.

The images, grainy and casual in nature, show Swift performing on a small stage, guitar in hand, far removed from the stadiums and sold-out arenas that now define her career, including three concerts in 2024 at Hard Rock Stadium.

On Jan. 27, 2008, Swift was 18 years old and had a growing, adoring fan base. She had released her first album two years earlier and had a modest country hit with “Tim McGraw.”

She did not yet have a famous boyfriend. Yes, she started dating Joe Jonas that summer, long before her Eras Tour and Travis Kelce.

The annual CookOff, known for its country-music, boot wearing-loving attendees and culinary competition, unfolded as expected.

Still early in her career, Swift introduced herself between songs and delivered a straightforward acoustic set to a group of teenage girls.

There was no indication that the performer on stage would go on to become one of the most influential artists of her generation.

Now, nearly two decades later, the resurfaced photos have transformed a routine community event into an unexpected footnote in music history.

What was once a typical South Florida weekend attraction is remembered today as a quiet starting point, when a future global star played to whoever happened to be listening.

On that Sunday, Pembroke Pines became part of the Swift lore as the site of her first South Florida concert.
