Passenger killed in Turnpike crash; driver from Pembroke Pines, FHP says
A multivehicle crash in Sunrise that left a Fort Lauderdale man dead Monday morning is under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
On Dec. 29 around 2 a.m., a BMW 428i rammed into the back of a Nissan Rogue while traveling in the outside lane of Florida’s Turnpike North near Sunrise Boulevard, according to FHP spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda.
The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Pembroke Pines, was behind the SUV, driven by a 67-year-old Fort Lauderdale man, and “unable to avoid [the Nissan] which was traveling at a slower speed,” the FHP report said.
After the BMW rear-ended the Nissan, it launched the SUV into a guardrail, causing it to roll over and land on its roof.
The BMW, which had a 31-year-old Fort Lauderdale man in the front seat, continued over the outside paved shoulder before going down a ditch.
Troopers pronounced the 31-year-old dead at the crash site and confirmed both drivers were taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatement.
The survivors’ conditions were not disclosed as the FHP continues its investigation.
