Magnet schools? Dual language programs? And how do I matriculate my kid outside our school boundary zone?

As the school choice window nears its end and the academic year enters its final half, the question of where to enroll your child for next year’s studies may have you confused.

Add in the threat of Broward County Public Schools’ Redefining Our Schools changes — which could close, repurpose or consolidate dozens of Broward schools next year — and it’s downright stressful.

To streamline the important decision, the district is hosting a free showcase for families to browse its educational options, ask administrators questions in real time and receive guidance on how to apply for different programs.

The Tuesday, Dec. 9, event will be hosted at Sunrise’s Amerant Bank Arena from 5 to 8 p.m . All BCPS institutions — over 200 elementary, middle and high schools — will be present.

Slated for display are the district’s magnet schools, extracurricular offerings and specialized programs including vocational schools, the Gifted Academy and dual enrollment alternatives from the College Academy at Broward College.

“The BCPS Showcase highlights the many high-quality educational programs available in our schools. From STEM to the Arts and everything in between, there are programs to spark students’ interests and put them on paths to success,” the district’s superintendent, Howard Hepburn, told the Pembroke Pines News on Dec. 4. “This event provides a unique opportunity for families to connect with school staff, ask questions and explore options to find the best fit for their students — all in one place.”

New to this year’s lineup is Silver Shores Academy K-8’s STEAM magnet in Miramar, a science, technoloy, engineering, aviation and math-centric program that’s a first of its kind in the district.

Technical support for families wanting to submit a school choice application before the Dec. 19 deadline will also be available on-site to guide you through questions and concerns that may come up.

BCPS will also host a giveaway for attendees and raffle tickets to Disney on Ice shows, the Broward Center’s spring showing of “Back to the Future: The Musical” and Florida Panthers hockey games.
