Pembroke Pines roads getting $4 million makeover. What projects are on the list?
The Pembroke Pines City Commission on Wednesday , Nov. 19, unanimously approved $4,132,788 for the first year of roadway and infrastructure improvements outlined in its three-year strategic plan, and added a new $250,000 traffic study for Districts 1 and 2 after commissioners said those neighborhoods have been feeling the brunt of congestion.
The item had been carried over from the city’s Oct. 15 meeting to give commissioners more time to review it as it was bifurcated into separate park-improvement and roadway-improvement components, allowing the first-year projects to move forward.
District 1 Commissioner Thomas Good Jr. said his district had no projects included in the original proposal presented during the October meeting and that residents in his district routinely raise concerns about traffic and neighborhood mobility.
“They are focused on the most critical need that the District 1 residents complain about, which is traffic calming,” Good said during Thursday night’s meeting. “We know that traffic calming is a very important element within an open-architecture type of community.”
Good also asked his colleagues on the dais to support adding a $250,000 traffic study for District 1. Commissioner Jay D. Schwartz requested that District 2 be included as well.
The commission approved the friendly amendement without opposition.
Mayor Angelo Castillo noted that the city is advancing the projects without raising taxes. After the amendment, the main motion passed 5-0.
