The City of Pembroke Pines has launched a relief effort to support Caribbean residents impacted by Hurricane Melissa, which plowed through islands such as Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba.

Hurricane Melissa — a monster Category 5 storm as it made landfall on Tuesday, Oct. 28, near New Hope, Jamaica — is headed for Bermuda next and has ravaged power grids, flooded streets and claimed the lives of dozens in the region, the Miami Herald reported.

City officials are encouraging residents and businesses to drop off supplies at one of the following six Pembroke Pines fire stations accepting donations seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Station 33: 600 SW 72 Ave.
  • Station 69: 9500 Pines Blvd.
  • Station 79: 19900 Pines Blvd.
  • Station 89: 13000 Pines Blvd.
  • Station 99: 16999 Pines Blvd.
  • Station 101: 6057 SW 198 Terrace

In a statement released Wednesday, the city listed the following supplies as welcome donations “to support our island neighbors in light of this storm’s devastation.” No used clothing or linens will be accepted.

  • Tarps
  • Water
  • Flashlights
  • Sleeping bags
  • Batteries
  • Large trash bags
  • Tents
  • Work gloves
  • Canned goods (1+ year expiration date)
  • Solar-powered lights
  • Hygiene kits
  • Baby diapers
  • First aid kits

Two Pembroke Pines library branches — South Regional/Broward County Library and Southwest Regional Library — will also be accepting similar supplies during operating hours as part of countywide hurricane relief effort.

  • South Regional/Broward County Library: 7300 Pines Blvd., Building 81; Monday through Wednesday (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Thursday through Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Southwest Regional Library: 16835 Sheridan St.; Monday through Wednesday (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Thursday through Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

Humanitarian Relief Drive

In addition to the city’s donation drive, the Florida Highway Patrol, GEM Global Empowerment Mission and multiple law enforcement agencies have partnered with Mobile Mike Public Relations to coordinate a Humanitarian Relief Drive from Nov. 4-7.

Collection sites will include:

  • Nov. 4-5: Aventura Mall, 19501 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura (East side in front of the Apple store).
  • Nov. 6: The Shops at Pembroke Gardens, 527 SW 145th Terrace, Pembroke Pines (Collection area at the trolley stop).
  • Nov. 7: Location TBA

Organizers shared they will be collecting specific items across several categories, including: shelter and relief supplies, health and hygiene, tools and recovery equipment, administrative, and communication and support materials.

For those who would like to donate money, Pembroke Pines city officials recommend giving to the American Red Cross.
