A Davie man is in jail after he’s accused of shooting a woman at her Pembroke Pines apartment complex and landing her in the hospital , according to authorities.

Police say a custody battle over their child led to shots ringing out Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Officers responded to gunfire heard at Advenir at San Tropez, located at Northwest 78th Terrace and Northwest Third Street, around 11 a.m., according to a statement released by the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

Police reported finding a woman with several bullet wounds when they arrived at the complex’s parking lot.

A rescue team rushed the woman, whose identity has not been released, to a hospital where she received surgery and is recovering from “serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening,” said Amanda Conwell, a spokesperson for the agency.

Her accused shooter — who police say is 24-year-old Otis Leevel Johnson — was seen driving off by witnesses shortly after firing. Conwell confirmed he was stopped and detained about 5 minutes later by Hollywood police near the 6200 block of Hollywood Boulevard.

Johnson and the woman were previously in a relationship and have a child together, leading to a heated, four-way argument over child custody between Johnson , the victim, and another unidentified man and woman at the complex’s parking lot, investigators said.

Johnson was the first to fire at the group, only striking the mother of his child, according to officers. The unidentified man, who was also armed, shot back but did not hit the 24-year-old, police said.

The Davie man faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Jail records show he is being held at Broward County’s Main Jail without bond.
