The Pembroke Pines City Commission returns to its regular schedule with its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, and the agenda includes several motions for approval, including citywide infrastructure projects, funding for senior services and discussion over the cancellation of a long-running golf tournament.

Key motions on the agenda

The largest expenditure on the consent agenda is a contract with Paletz Roofing and Inspections, Inc. to replace city-owned roofs.

The contract is for an amount not to exceed $577,964.80. This includes $10,320.80 in payment and performance bonds along with a 10% owner’s contingency for $51,604.

The roofs included in the project:

  • Rose G. Price Park, 901 NW 208th Ave.
  • R&R Village, 1461 SW 81st Ave.
  • West Campus Building I, 18501 Pembroke Road
  • Central Campus Building Y, 12350 Sheridan St.
  • FSU Building C, 601 SW 172nd Ave.

Also on the agenda are two motions addressing the operations and funding of the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center.

Item 2 would establish a three-year partnership with the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County, running from Jan. 1, 2026, through Dec. 31, 2028. The agreement outlines the legal terms for future annual funding.

Item 3 approves $499,000 in grant funding for senior services in 2026. This includes $360,000 for Title IIIB Supportive Services, which covers adult day care, transportation, housing improvements and recreation for seniors.

Another $90,000 would be allocated for Title IIIE Caregiver Support Services, which includes respite care, transportation, counseling and training for family caregivers, and $49,000 as a local match.

Three motions on the agenda cover maintenance and testing at city water and wastewater facilities. One approves the purchase of repair parts for wastewater lift stations from Smith & Loveless, Inc., on an as-needed basis, up to $325,000 annually

Another motion amends the Florida Design Drilling contract, increasing the total for well rehabilitation services to over $346,000. The third motion, Item 5, contracts All Webbs Enterprises, Inc. for $144,100 to perform Mechanical Integrity Testing (MIT) on injection wells at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Discussion item

A potential contentious item is item 9, introduced by District 2 Commissioner Jay D. Schwartz, concerning the cancellation of the Honorable Frank C. Ortis Annual Golf Tournament.

The long-running event traditionally is held the Friday before spring break to benefit the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. The agenda indicates that a new date was selected for a different tournament on March 13, breaking the long-standing tradition.

Schwartz says the change occurred “without express authorization or advisement to the City Commission,” the agenda reads.

The item centers on allegations that the change happened without approval from the nonprofit’s board of directors and that key stakeholders, including past sponsors, vendors, and parent volunteers. Schwartz plans to present a detailed breakdown of the negative financial impact on the Charter School Foundation at the commission meeting.

What comes next?

The second of two January commission meetings is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

Residents can tune into the meeting by watching the livestream on the city’s Pines Media channel on YouTube or attend in person at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way.
