Pembroke Pines will soon get a chance to take part in the royal game with the Mayor’s Chess Challenge series.

The city, in partnership with mayors across Broward County, will welcome players of all ages and skill levels for a morning of chess on Saturday, May 9, at Club 19 at Pembroke Lakes Golf Club, 10500 Taft St.

The event is free, family-friendly and meant to bring together community members, elected officials and chess enthusiasts.

Play is scheduled to run from 9 to 11 a.m., with participants competing against other players and, in some cases, county leaders.

There will be beginner, intermediate and advanced placements for general play.

For those who are new to the game, or simply a little rusty, the event will have a rookie station with “no stress chess.”

Throughout the morning, raffles are scheduled at 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m. The event is set to wrap up at 11 a.m. with the announcement of the Check Mate Champion and final standings.

Now in its 11th year, the Mayor’s Chess Challenge series aims to celebrate the game with education and community building, letting players from across South Florida compete and connect with local leaders.
