‘Star Wars,’ art workshops, book club: Start May with these Pines weekend events
Welcome to May, Pembroke Pines. The nights are longer, the humidity is higher and the possibilities on how to ring in the new month are endless.
This weekend, the city’s got a number of ways to celebrate, including pool fun, community art workshops, early Mother’s Day celebrations, a homeowner’s dream convention and an eight-hour party that could pull you into the “Dark Side.”
We’ve done the work of laying out your options. Now it’s your turn to choose which you’ll pencil into your schedule.
Here are the events taking over Pembroke Pines from Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3:
Water Safety Day
The City of Pembroke Pines invites you to a morning of water fun and swimming tips at its annual Water Safety Day from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Headlining the event are activities at the center’s pool and water park, vendors, giveaways, a live DJ, food and water safety workshops by first responders. All attendees will have a chance to learn CPR and win giveaway prizes at this all-ages, free event. No registration is required.

CommUNITY: 250 Years in the Making Tapestry Workshop
Celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence by leaving your mark on history. Studio18 Art Complex will host a workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday during which residents can add to a large-scale community tapestry and stitch “together fabric, stories, and shared creativity.” The artwork will then be pieced together by South Florida artist Magda Love and installed at City Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

Studio Saturday: Fused Glass Pendant Workshop
Ever wanted to wear your own art? You can at Studio18 Art Complex’s jewelry workshop Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Resident artist Joni Esser-Stuart will teach participants the basics of kiln-formed glass, including how to cut glass and design fused glass pendants, and leave attendees with three handmade pieces to take home. Admission is $45 and two things are required: Be 18 years old or older and wear closed-toe shoes.

South Florida Home Show
If you’re looking to revamp your home, you’ll want to pass by the South Florida Home Show at the Charles F. Dodge City Center on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibit will feature several home improvement professionals who will give advice, provide exclusive show deals, and guide you on minor renovations and major remodels. Saturday’s show is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday’s from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free with online registration, but $10 if purchased at the box office.

Jedi vs. Sith: Battle of the Factions
Celebrate all things “Star Wars” ahead of May the 4th at this Baoshi Food Hall + Bar party on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. Upon arriving, attendees will choose their faction, joining the Jedi’s “light side” or Sith’s “dark side” for the day. That’s followed by the science fiction bash’s Kandi bracelet making, trivia, “Great Galaxy” scavenger hunt, “galactic” line dancing and “Cantina” karaoke activities. Admission is free for all ages and open to the public.

Queen of the Court Mommy & Me
This early Mother’s Day celebration features a competitive twist and takes over the Rose G. Price Park Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Moms and their mini-me can enjoy rotating doubles play, parent-child drills and games, a photo station and several giveaways. The event is beginner-friendly and admission includes court time, light refreshments and a special keepsake for Mom. Tickets are $53.36 and include one parent and one child.

PembrokeKIDS x Kendra Scott
Pembroke Gardens treats moms to Sunday fun from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at jeweler Kendra Scott. Headlining the event are face painting with ballet school Armour Dance, arts and crafts, light bites and sips from Carrot Express, and raffles from several of the plaza’s stores. Three time slots are available: 11 a.m. to noon, noon to 1 p.m., and 1 to 2 p.m. Adults can attend for free but kids require a $5 ticket.

Books & Boba
Bookworms can enjoy an afternoon of literary banter and milk tea at this Broward Bookies event at 3 p.m. Sunday at Leafy Restaurant. Club members will discuss “The God of the Woods,” a 2024 mystery novel about the 1975 disappearance of a teen girl from her summer camp. Afterward, enjoy bites from the Vietnamese restaurant and a summer-inspired craft. Book lovers must register by 6 p.m. on Friday, May 1, to attend.

Wellness Sunday x JETSET
Get a sweaty start to your Sunday with this Mother’s Day-inspired exercise class at Pembroke Gardens. From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., JETSET will guide participants through a strength and flow-focused workout followed by brand pop-ups from Bluemercury, MESPA and Crema Gourmet, post-class recovery sessions and permanent jewelry offerings. Admission is $12.50 and attendees must bring their own mats.
