The “block party” phenomenon originated as a uniquely New York City way to celebrate.

Proverbially intertwined with the rise of hip-hop, DJs spinning records as crowds danced on sidewalks and apartment courtyards, these parties brought together communities at critical times in history.

Now that same spirit of camaraderie and community, from the 212 to the 954, is coming to Pembroke Pines.

The city is hosting its monthly Throwback Thursday concert series that celebrates hits of different decades, performed by local and regional bands.

The night of free live entertainment runs from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, at the Charles F. Dodge City Center quad, 601 City Center Way.

Headlining this month’s Beats & Bites is DJ Sama, also known as Felix Sama, who specializes in freestyle, Latin, EDM, hip-hop and RnB music styles.

Food trucks will begin serving at 6 p.m. and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The event is open to all ages and registration is not required.

For more information, contact the Special Events office at 954-392-2116 or visit the city’s website.
